SIP Trunking

What is a SIP Trunk?

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the network protocol that establishes and communicates connections for IP (Internet) Telephony, the modern equivalent of an old telephone line. The Trunk refers to a group of phone lines. Combining SIP phone lines, phone numbers and Direct Inward Dials (DIDs), you can create complex and flexible IP-PBX systems.

A SIP Trunk utilises Internet Telephony Service Providers to provide Unified Communications to end users. Using an IP-PBX software – like 3CX, users are now able to phase out the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), moving from physical copper lines to IP Telephony. VoIP and Unified Communications solutions offer audio, video, web, email, chat and more through the IP network.
